To add to jestors point - where i live, if i went outside with a katana id find myslef with a good number of cops all pointing guns at my face - now i dont carw how good with a sword or lightsaber you are - you cant defend against that.
For the record yes I do have a katana - i learned how to use it but due to illness she stays on her rack except for the 4 monthly blade clean.
The pen (or brain ) is mightier than the sword and the weapon of choice of the Jedi(ist) Just my thoughts ...
We have many martial artists around the temple, some active some missed as well as military persons, cops/security etc etc etc and all will have a different viewpoint.
The sabers/hilts are as said for ceremonial use although some of us collect as a side hobby - does collection spiders mean i think im spiderman? does an interest in cars mean i think im the stig or lewis hamilton?

this is in response to that comment, walking out of your house with a blade...
when the time comes where you will be needed in full 'gear' I doubt the established government will even have time to look at you, let alone point guns at you
I am not talking about walking around armed on normal days, thats just foolish, I meant....the day in witch good people are all that stands in the way of total anarchy and death...
when that day eventually comes, I hope you are ready for it. cause hand to hand combat training is useful, but when that day comes, it wont save you or your family and friends...
just because something is not accepted now a days, doesnt mean that it wont be in the future...
its fun to pretend, but if you took up this jedi calling, be prepared for the worst, as well as enjoy the peace while it lasts

Ready to physically defend yes, but the point of being a Jedi, to me, first is peaceful means....
If it comes to a physical altercation, we, as keepers of the peace, have already lost... In my opinon...

Sometimes, there is no choice at all...the situation was created by someone else at another place and time... you never had the power to defuse it...it had nothing to do with your success or failure at all...
Most things are far out of control for a single soul, even jedi...
All you can do when the time comes is stand up and fight for what you believe in, die for what you believe in or run away, as most do...
plus I feel that you are making this statement about no weapon... with a set idea of what the 'enemy' will be. To me that is a mistake... when I think of that possible enemy; its a vague shapeless shadow... your right though, peace first, but...explore all the options at your disposal, when it comes to defense of what really matters...
not trying to be disrespectful, was just speaking from experiance... Spent several years in a military high school, it was as close to anarchy as I have ever seen in my life and to assume that you always have the power to walk away or to defuse a situation, is arrogant, and the jedi can not afford that luxury...assume nothing, take each situation as a new challenge
although I value your statement for training purpose Jestor... the world isnt black and white like that
anyway, sorry for this long run on sentence... but you fired me up Jestor

HAHA, , Draago, I am glad you take it in the spirit in which it is intended... I merely enjoy good conversation...
This is true, it is not black and white, I and many of us here, would fight for the right cause...
Sometimes, as Grandmaster Kana says, the pen is mightier than the sword, and that is the way to fight... meaning the fight will be mental, where one side, in a civlized discussion, debates with the opponent, the pros and cons of a current course... Mental thrusts and parlays...
And, of course, sometimes, physical conforntation is all some will understand...
You always have a choice, to not fight... and dying, may be the right choice... Would you stop fighting, and choose self sacrifice to make a strategic move in a confrontation? Knowing that your death was for a greater good?
What level of physical confrontation? To merely incapacitate? Break the arm? Or to sever the arm?
( I really do enjoy conversations, it lets me think on different subjects... if you get upset or angry, let me know, I will stop...)

haha, no Jester I dont get upset easily...
I still have to disagree with you on the choice comment though...
the choice is there, yes, but there no real choice to be made... at least for me
but I admit I am not much of a philosopher... I learn most of my lessons in real life... most; painfully and with great effort to keep the knowledge earned
I have been reading on this sites training ect. doubt I will spend that much time here, as I consider myself trained (not a master, but confident in what I know)...and am not willing to write essays for this site and spend 8 months learning stuff that will not be of much help to me... considering what I have read about this sites accepted truths of life, we dont agree...
I will still pop in and have some chats with people though, like I said I have great respect for non-force sensitive people who live by the jedi code...
but I dont believe it to be a place where I will get much help in my quest.
If I thought there was another person here... who could generate 'jedi like' energy in real life, I would reconsider this... but,
honestly...does anyone know what a Kao-Ken is? have you ever tried to use the power you may have? think the right thing, power up for the right reason, put all else out of your mind, and you may get a glimpse of what I do daily to train... in my life everything is secondary to my training...
Yes, I have to work to pay bills, but they are jobs I would walk away from in seconds.. I dont really own anything, I dont have a social life, not married and never will be... so I started searching for others like me...
but for all my looking, I have never found one like me... similar ...yes, but never the real deal
I have nothing else to add to this for now, except to say these words were not meant to insult what this site is doing for people, I think its a great thing...but I cant say its what I had hoped for...but I will keep looking

As you seem to be easy to talk to/with.. I will remind you of a few old sayings...
The fool thinks himself to be wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool. -William Shakespeare
Only a fool knows everything. A wise man knows how little he knows. -Unknown
Of course, I can argue the other side of this discussion as well...
Controversy equalizes fools and wise men -- and the fools know it.
-Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
I am offering this as some free advice, (ya get what ya pay for... lol.. )...
Would you tell your senior in Martial Arts, or any practioner really, that \"No thanks, I seem to have all the tecniques I need...\"
To balance the Yin Yang, in anything, you need to take care of both sides, or you lose your balance...
Your \"Draago\" person, like my \"Jestor\" person, needs balance, I too, had the body, the physical, but I was lacking the mental... I knew this... This environment here is about the mental, as a virtual learning center, we are teaching the student, to be who they want to be, not who we want them to be... (ok, actually, we want you to be the person that you want to be.. so actually, my last staement is both true and false... lol... damn riddle logic!! :silly: )
One last point, and I too have had my say for now....
In our lessons, Joe Campbell says:
\"I do not consider something important, just because someone says it is...\"
I do understand and respect this, that maybe you are not at a point where you are ready... Yes, the mental aspect seems slower paced, physically... Meaning it appears to take longer to learn to do a mental process then it appears to learn a physical process...
This, in my experiance, is not necesarily so... It is our perception of time that makes it appear so... like when waiting for something, the clock, drags, but when having a good time, that clock goes fast!!
But we can continue to explore this, should you decide to stay...

hmm, where to start...you let loose on that last message...lol
well first...'Would you tell your senior in Martial Arts, or any practioner really, that \"No thanks, I seem to have all the tecniques I need...\"'
I have and will again...I have even gone one step farther than that and challenged the teachers of schools to prove me wrong... sometimes they prove me wrong, but more often; prove me right... I dont like wasting time, ...it is the one and only thing that is a true wealth of a person...time, some would say love as well, but not me
hanging around learning from someone who is inferior to your own skill level or has different goals than you; is often counter-productive, maybe even; is the act of a fool. although it can be fun...lol
second, I dont claim to know everything, as I said earlier, I consider myself to be a knight, not a master...for many reasons, but mostly cause I am not totally white hat... have a very dark streak running down the center and it is well known to me. White is in control, but I feel that presence of Black daily (most people feel the grey, that is common, but my darker side is just that..black)
now... I wouldnt call myself wise nor fool, but somewhere in the middle
regardless of the title, I know what I am after, and what I need work on for balance... and the mental aspect is great, but I dont have the kind of patience or time to sit in classroom study (again), especially on things I have heard many times before from many different types of holy men.
like I said I am not going anywhere, I like the chats, always nice...but as for the training of this order... I havent seen much thats new to me... that I would make such an investment of time in...
after closer to 5 years of personal study, its tough to not get frustrated at information repeated...
speaking of, I think we killed this post on lightsabers...lol
my bad all
