It is a great thing to not speek of the force to my friends and family, but to show them what a Jedi can do when they are one with the force. It has been a long time since I was struck also.

My lightsaber is more then a tool, it is my religious symbol. and I treat it with the respect it deserves. One can become injured very easily if it is treated without any, and my saber has saved me more times then i can count.

It was the ultimate weapon, in knowing this the Jedi Masters destroyed it along with the blueprints. For if any dark lord held it they would become unstopable. This lightsaber was so powerful it would go threw other blades with ease. The Jedi that created it was sworn to never do so again.

Then do so Doden - many of us do - soke folks just collect hilts as a separate 'hobby' some have one purely for jediism and some for both.
Jediism isnt just about sabers and likewise swords/sabers (real or otherwise) ane not restricted to Jediism
You dont have to be a racing driver to own a car

you can actually buy kits now o build your own which are great for customising - ive done this myself for a few hilts for others, or do a google for the bigyellowbox which gives you the guide to building different styles and a parts list.
BUT a lot depends on what you want from the hilt - a basic hilt is easy, a led hilt a bit harder and a full duelling hult harder again - you need to decide what you want from the outset - there are lots of posts here ablut jilts to look thru so use our site search tool.
Another factor is where in the world you live - some places make it hard to get decent parts etc (UK for example)

google \"how to make a lightsaber\" and also search the site, there are many sites around that offer how to build and also offer to build for you a custom saber

I saw this post and had to comment.. do none of you actually have true fighting blades?
I own 2 custom Katana, hand folded carbon steel, the real deal... and I learned how to use them
so although its great fun to talk about fun light-sabers, I have to wonder...are you prepared to step up if the times call for the real life Jedi members to reveal themselves?

As you spend your time here, you will see many of us have sabers for homage, or ceremonial purposes... Or for just plain fun!!... lol...
As far as a \"when duty calls\" type of response, a good many of us are Martial Artists, Security, Police, and Soldiers....
I am a Martial Artist.. A practitioner, and instructor, of Tae Kwon Do, MooDukKwon style...
I do not practice any sort of weapon, to become dependent upon a weapon, that I may, or may not have with me when needed seems risky...
I practice how to defend against them...
I would not mind having a couple aroound for the exercise, but I find my time too short to fit in another task.. lol...
