My aikido instructor used to say that there is no gender within the dojo.

lol. My krav instructor told me once that I was behaving like a wet nappy and instructed my sparring partner to slap me hard in the face till I responded with a decent amount of aggression. I think Krav trainers are like that by default :D

@ Jestor:HA! i wasnt sure if anyone was around lol
i dont know if you actually had to google that lol but its cool you answered!

@ Brenna: ive seen that some women feel like they lose femininity by training to be able to really fight and some women are just intimidated, they dont know their own strength (or at least their potential) and they dont think theyll ever be able to REALLY be good

the idea of becoming a warrior is much bigger than someone being able to fistfight
a person with the right frame of mind can have zero martial training and be very dangerous to contend wit because they have that emotional intensity that doesnt stop or backdown or get stuck in being timid or doubtful

such people will almost always find a way to make it through to the other side

from the perspective of one day hopefully being a father and a husband i feel its ALMOST more important for women to accept the challenge of living as warriors than it is for men

but the deeper truth is that its just the best way to live, psychologically

it forces one into humility because death is right here with us - always the understanding is that we live on the razors edge and it takes very little for the whole thing to vanish

and this is true for all of us no matter what
its just that warriors are aware of it on an everyday level and most "average" people really dont acknowledge it at all

but in the face of that and with that humility it also means that we make the connection between our every day decisions and our likelihood of survival - no one has to explain the importance of procedure to someone stationed in afghanistan - and also with this we teach ourselves that there is no time to waste on stupid frivolities

lol i know a lot about stupid frivolities

ive heard people say that a life worth living is a life worth dying for

one of the main aims of Budo is to prepare the psyche to face ones death with deliberateness and dignity and courage

this is not an issue of being some glorious hero

its more like an issue of swimming out into the ocean at nigh with no one around, knowing that we probably wont make it back

wrist and arm locks - almost all of these from standing position

mostly i let the people in the videos do the talking but i would like to suggest that as a general rule locks and submissions should not be locks and submissions, they should be breaks

there are some exceptions such as restraining a person because they are someone you love or they mentally ill (in my case its the same thing lol) but basically put it to this litmus - they have a knife and a gun that you dont know about but will use as soon as you feel you are in control and three of their friends are running up from behind you right now

mostly an adult should be able to prevent the situation from reaching the point where martial skill is needed

if you are an adult with that mindset and a situation reaches this level then dont be polite lol youre past that point of the conversation. you shouldnt need this stuff with someone that its not correct to use it on 100 percent - generally its only ego which causes that and the severity of the consequences must outweigh the ego

some say train to restrain, and break only when its appropriate

imo, train to break, and only restrain when its appropriate

that being said most of these are very easy to use without breaking

i think what i like most about this video is that he pretty much says "tell it to someone who cares" to people who dont like what he teaches

Women who believe that being able to fight for their own survival, or to be a warrior requires the sacrifice of their femininity, have a limited understanding of both concepts.

arm/wrist locks

this is the perspective that i have come to about locks: the important part is getting there
its not so much that someone has to grab your wrist in a certain way or punch a certain way as it is that you just get hold of them or use the angle and momentum of their motion or use the fact that they have a grip on you to your advantage

when i am striking at someone the idea is kind of to hunt for openings or if there is no opening then to make one

with these kinds of joint locking techniques the idea is more that they are given by the other person offering a limb

how you get there is less important than getting there

it doesnt do well to force the technique if they are not giving you the limb, but if they give you the limb even for a moment use that moment to go for the best most appropriate technique that you know

if it doesnt work then just go on - nothing is guaranteed - but many of these are easier to get if you practice them with the mind of making them work when the opportunity presents itself even if its not EXACTLY how youve practiced it in class

im not talking about forcing inappropriate technique - im talking about using an appropriate technique and being able to actually use it when someone tries to hit you or puts their hands on you

the name of the game in my mind is "dont chase it - but when its given, take it and make it work"

if it helps - just focus on the moment of the break itself.
look at that moment and then ask "how do i get them here?
what conditions have to be met and what do i have to do to be able to put someone in this situation when it really matters? and can i?"

shihonage was the technique that really made me understand that aikido is so much more dangerous and effective than it appears to be - this is only a throw if tori wants to throw - if tori wants to break it becomes a break.
for me at least, by keeping the arm stretched a bit and using my shoulder as leverage against it, it is actually easier to break with this technique than it is to throw

the striking presented in this video is simplistic as he demonstrates it - but the jujutsu is solid

what i like about jkd is that at its very heart it IS mixed martial arts

i abide by the bruce lee quote "absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own"

everything in my life and my mind, to the best of my ability, is put to that litmus

i like that so much in fact that i think im going to absorb that quote into my avatar spot lol

i think its kind of funny that he recomends the closed hand for the same basic reason i usually use a sort of closed hand - for me it was a poke in the eye that made me realize i need to be aware of how i osition my hands with some elbow techniques
but i agree with what he says basically - its all personal preference
