last about knives -

i didnt find anyone saying this directly so -

if someone knows better than what i am about to say then please dont be shy about correcting me

i would consider it worth it

punctures kill - stabbing is more dangerous than cutting

blood loss from being cut can make a person lose consciousness in minutes especially if there is an artery hit
arteries spurt bright red in synch with the heart beat and represent a very serious wound
veins bleed steadily and are also serious - but
that being said - generally cuts and slashes can be treated and are survivable

with punctures wounds the adrenaline (i assume its adrenaline) can keep you going like nothing happened for several minutes - a person might even "win" the fight, only to die before the EMTs arrive

also - people who do survive often often often say "i thought they were just punching me"

its best to assume that anyone who wants to fight is perfectly ok with stabbing the person theyre fighting

the most vital areas are the the entire rib cage area and the throat - after that your eyes -the eyes are less important than the heart - you have two of them

body shots are the most common targets (though some will go for the face and some will even just try to cut you anywhere)

you HAVE TO PROTECT YOUR HEART AND LUNGS AND THROAT

imo once they are close enough to stab you imo creating space is no longer a reasonable option

if someone makes contact or is so that close to you that they can and they are using a knife then imo the most important thing is to combat them directly - but that is just my opinion and i am not any kind of special forces guy or expert of any kind

unless someone else has something they want to add to the knife section i am done
i hate knives lol
i think theyre great murder weapons and terrible self defense weapons

theres still some important things to put here on knives

this was really good

http://wildernessarena.com/urban-survival-2/urban-hostile-areas/survive-knife-attack

what i really wanted to address in this post however is SHOCK

shock can kill you even if you survive the knife

"Shock occurs when the body is not getting enough blood flow and oxygen

Shock is a life-threatening medical condition as a result of insufficient blood flow throughout the body. Shock often accompanies severe injury

Medical shock is a medical emergency

in this context, the symptoms and causes of shock are moot - assume shock whenever anyone is stabbed and go into treatment immediately WHILE CONTACTING police as soon as the encounter is over

which of these priorities (self treatment and contacting medical assistance) is most important to put before the other is a matter of the specifics of the situation

if youre with someone who has a cell phone for instance then they should be instructed to call 911 (here in the states) and you go right into treatment

if youre alone (which means that no one who personally knows you is around) then the most important thing is to get on the phone - you can still begin treatment for shock while doing this but you have to let someone know whats happened

i am not a doctor or medical professional

i am not giving medical advice

the following is taken from various informational resources available online

i will link to the resources used

!!BREATH!!

THIS IS ALWAYS THE REAL STEP ONE

focusing on steady and rythmic and deep breathing is the key to staying calm and to staying alive in many different kinds of extreme situations

http://www.wikihow.com/Treat-Shock

http://www.webmd.com/first-aid/shock-treatment

Call 911

1. Lay Down

Elevate feet about 12 inches [unless head, neck, or back is injured or you suspect broken hip or leg bones.]

Do not raise the person's head.

Turn on side if vomiting or bleeding from the mouth. (this can happen. traumatic experience can cause vomiting and internal bleeding can cause bleeding from the mouth)

Check breathing every 5 minutes until help arrives.

(again i am not a medical professional - that being said if you are self administering treatment for shock it

4. Treat Obvious Injuries

5. Keep Warm and Comfortable
Loosen restrictive clothing.
Cover with coat or blanket if available.
Keep still. Do not move unless there is danger.
Reassure yourself.
Do not eat or drink anything.

on REASSURING YOURSELF

our will to live is much more powerful than we realize
follow the steps, stay calm, help is on the way
decide to live, stay calm

http://www.livestrong.com/article/208367-what-are-the-treatments-for-punctured-lungs/

"Overview

Trauma from a gunshot, knife wound or high force blunt trauma, like a car accident, can all lead to a punctured lung. Typically when the lung is punctured, it leads to a traumatic pneumothorax, or a collection of air between the lung tissue and the chest cavity, or pleural space. It is not a common condition but can be life threatening and needs rapid assessment and treatment. The treatment will depend upon the size of the injury and the response of the lungs and surrounding tissue.

Coverage

A large chest wound that penetrates to the lungs may cause a sucking chest wound, in which air is pulled in through the wound every time the person attempts to breath. Medical professionals place a special bandage that contains petroleum jelly on the wound to create a seal. The bandage will only be taped on three sides so air can escape the wound but not return.

i have read that in the event of such a wound you should use pressure from your hand if nothing else is available - basically, cover up the hole. let the excess air out but not in to the greatest degree you are able
