Service Transcript
(09:05:31) Rosalyn_J: Hi everyone, were going to go ahead and get started
(09:05:51) Rosalyn_J: ---
(09:06:06) Rosalyn_J: Welcome all to the memorial today, as you prepare yourselves mentally, we have a small list of songs that were known to bring joy to Senan, and we invite you to play it as we begin. Here is the youtube link:
(09:06:27) Rosalyn_J: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLyfcTUqqtOJEaz0fQ3ykeSDuvksEMy5fE&jct=Yh6HoG8Pn8Vb4l6B-3xFbZc_56wSAg&disable_polymer=true
(09:07:58) Rosalyn_J: I want to welcome you all to this memorial service for Brother Senan. Although we are geographically scattered, our love for this man brings us together today
(09:08:29) Rosalyn_J: We welcome those who knew him close, those who worked with him, those who listened to him, and those who encountered our beloved friend.
(09:08:46) Rosalyn_J: We will open the floor occasionally for stories, and we ask that you respect the order of the story, and those speaking
(09:08:55) Rosalyn_J: Thank you
(09:09:22) Rosalyn_J: We have spoken already his name, but we have not addressed him fully.
(09:09:40) Rosalyn_J: Within the Temple the rank of a person is not simply given, it is earned or bestowed after having already earned it
(09:10:00) Rosalyn_J: Senan is no different and the many titles and duties he bore represented a pillar in our community who often brought us together as often as he had to seperate us for our own good
(09:10:37) Rosalyn_J: Senan joined the Temple of the Jedi Order on October 31, 2013
(09:10:54) Rosalyn_J: and became an apprentice to Senior Knight tzb on December 12, 2015
(09:11:14) Rosalyn_J: He was Knighted on June 12, 2017
(09:11:31) Rosalyn_J: Senan served as Security Officer beginning July 5, 2017
(09:11:47) Rosalyn_J: and on
December 24, 2017, Senan became a Councillor after serving for a short time as a Knight Advisor to the Council
(09:12:00) Rosalyn_J: Senan served as Training Master to thomaswfaulkner beginning September 8, 2017
(09:12:09) Rosalyn_J: and Knighted him on August 4, 2018
(09:12:26) Rosalyn_J: And to vladucard beginning July 30, 2017
(09:12:36) Rosalyn_J: And finally to Kyrin Wyldstar beginning Jan 30, 2018
(09:13:53) Rosalyn_J: It is fitting that those connected closet to Senan be offered the first opportunity to share a few words or a short story about what he represented to them
(09:14:22) Rosalyn_J: We will first hear from tzb, who though he couldn't be here, would like to sharesome words
(09:14:44) Rosalyn_J: " return to the Jedi world after an extended leave of absence because of the devastating news of the death of my Apprentice, Senan.
(09:15:21) Rosalyn_J: Senan started the Jedi path on the same day I did, we signed up to our former Temple on the same day and were brothers for years.
(09:15:47) Rosalyn_J: In time, I became a Knight first, and over the course of several years, Senan trained as my Apprentice.
(09:16:09) Rosalyn_J: He went on to succeed beyond my greatest achievements as a Jedi, not only in his position within the Temple (he was promoted to the council after my departure), but as a Jedi, as a friend, as a human being.
(09:16:43) Rosalyn_J: Steve and I had much in common, a shared belief in the more Taoist threads of Jediism, a passion for Samurai wisdom, a fascination with fraternity and compassionate humanity.
(09:17:05) Rosalyn_J: I can’t recall a time we didn’t see eye to eye on an issue.
(09:17:19) Rosalyn_J: He was a wonderful friend who I felt comfortable sharing deep thoughts and feelings with. He had my trust and deserved it.
(09:17:44) Rosalyn_J: There’s so much I could tell about him, jokes, insights, wisdom and laughter and stupid in-jokes which made us happy, which I remember with a smile and a tear today
(09:18:06) Rosalyn_J: but I won’t beat around the bush; Senan was diagnosed with cancer in 2016.
(09:18:22) Rosalyn_J: Whilst this was obviously incredibly bad news, he continued in his Jedi practice and faith unfazed.
(09:18:41) Rosalyn_J: Senan fought, and fought hard.
(09:18:45) Temple remote: Proteus logs into the Chat.
(09:18:57) Rosalyn_J: He fought in ways I don’t know if I could.
(09:19:11) Rosalyn_J: He remained positive, upbeat, strong in his weakness, fearless in his anxiety.
(09:19:47) Rosalyn_J: It was staggering to witness, and quite clear to me as soon as he began dealing with it that Senan had nothing more to learn from me-
(09:20:08) Rosalyn_J: he was doing what we had both been trying to do, letting his faith guide him, letting his presence, peace, harmony direct him. He was a Jedi beyond anything I could have imagined.
(09:21:24) Rosalyn_J: Senan and I didn’t speak so much, after his diagnosis. We certainly kept up our semi regular catch-ups,
(09:21:42) Rosalyn_J: but due to my own distaste at Temple politics, and his own business of getting well, neither of us imposed too much on the other.
(09:22:03) Rosalyn_J: I like to believe and hope that he knew, I thought of him often.
(09:22:20) Rosalyn_J: It was a day of great relief when I heard his cancer was seemingly in remission, and then another great shock to hear it had returned.
(09:22:42) Rosalyn_J: I don’t want to labour this point, but in truth I felt all but useless to this wonderful, strong human being who was doing so much more than I ever had, and still calling me “Master”.
(09:22:59) Rosalyn_J: It felt… wrong (an understatement).
(09:23:12) Rosalyn_J: By this time, Senan was a master himself, with apprentices of his own, lessons to teach and responsibilities to both the Temple and another, parallel organisation.
(09:23:42) Rosalyn_J: Last week, after a fight worthy of a Jedi, Senan lost his battle with cancer.
(09:24:01) Rosalyn_J: I found out some time after the event, as is the way with these geographically distributed relationships.
(09:24:22) Rosalyn_J: We hadn’t spoken in a while, since late August, but from what I could see he was carrying on a normal, active life.
(09:24:36) Rosalyn_J: From what I could see.
(09:24:54) Rosalyn_J: This weekend, a few Facebook posts alerted me to the worst, and I returned to the Temple to share news of my brother Jedi’s passing into the wider stream of the Force.
(09:25:24) Rosalyn_J: Since then, there has been an outpouring of grief from my fellow Jedi.
(09:25:41) Rosalyn_J: Many old faces have spilled out of the woodwork, many old names have reappeared for the first time in years, and indeed, many names new to me have paid sincere respects to my brother’s memory
(09:25:56) Rosalyn_J: It speaks highly indeed to his strength, honour, sense of duty and sheer bloody charisma that few if any have a bad word to say about the man.
(09:26:12) Rosalyn_J: He is, for many, THE model Jedi Knight.
(09:26:30) Rosalyn_J: His voice was the voice of reason more often than any other, a voice for sanity and compassion in a chaotic, mixed up space.
(09:26:52) Rosalyn_J: Something which has struck me particularly powerfully, are the number of other Jedi who have spoken of the solace they have taken from the courage with which Senan recounted his health issues,
(09:27:07) Rosalyn_J: the intimate detail he shared and the unflinching lens he cast over cancer, colon cancer at that.
(09:27:22) Rosalyn_J: Several other Jedi with cancer diagnoses or chronic illnesses have come forward and thanked him for making them feel less alone, less afraid.
(09:27:36) Rosalyn_J: Just when I thought this guy couldn’t be more of a hero, here he is literally giving hope to those with the same illness he was giving his life to fight.
(09:27:39) Temple remote: Nakis has been logged out (Timeout).
(09:27:41) Temple remote: Nakis logs into the Chat.
(09:28:07) Rosalyn_J: He is gone, and I am so sad. I feel tremendous guilt not to have been closer by him at the end.
(09:28:20) Rosalyn_J: I wish I had told him the reason for my withdrawal, that I had nothing at all to teach, and everything to learn.
(09:28:36) Rosalyn_J: That he was in my thoughts most days, that I cared deeply for his happiness, faith, heart.
(09:28:48) Rosalyn_J: That he made me proud in every way, but that I was proudest to simply walk beside him. In the end, he was not my Apprentice; he was my brother.
(09:28:59) Rosalyn_J: My brother he remains.
(09:29:02) Rosalyn_J: "
(09:29:57) Rosalyn_J: Thank you tzb for those wonderful words
(09:30:43) Temple remote: Proteus has been logged out (Timeout).
(09:30:47) Rosalyn_J: And now, I'd like to offer an opportunity to thomas to offer some words
(09:32:02) thomaswfaulkner: Thank you Ros
(09:32:35) Temple remote: Proteus logs into the Chat.
(09:32:46) thomaswfaulkner: I never know how to make a start in describing the man Senan shared with all of us.
(09:33:01) thomaswfaulkner: Senan was an inspiration beyond his words.
(09:33:38) thomaswfaulkner: He was that Knight, and friend who embodied, exactly, the words he shared with us.
(09:34:15) thomaswfaulkner: I remember, the first critical review I received from him and it came tagged along with the lesson on courage.
(09:35:42) thomaswfaulkner: He said, that my way of handling conflict was appropriate, but to recognize that sometimes you are left to face life with what you have and you must do whatever you feel is necessary without sacrificing who you are.
(09:35:53) thomaswfaulkner: Never once did Steve back down from standing up for what he believed in or what he knew was right.
(09:36:57) thomaswfaulkner: Throughout his battles with cancer, Steve courageously shared his life's light and journey with us and taught us, in my opinion, the most valuable lesson anyone could teach, the manifestation of embodying his principles and values, regardless of the circumstance, and how to preserve that purely you, youness, of life…
(09:37:36) thomaswfaulkner: that light that uniquely shines your suchness on the world…
(09:37:58) thomaswfaulkner: that flavor that you share with all those willing to share in with you.
(09:38:16) thomaswfaulkner: And though gone in body, my teacher, my brother,
(09:39:06) thomaswfaulkner: I will carry your light and live the way in which your flavor of being is shared with my children and the people who waltz in and out of my life.
(09:39:56) thomaswfaulkner: The Art of Senan will still burn bright with the light of what it meant to be you and what it means to love, serve, and protect...unconditionally.
(09:41:15) thomaswfaulkner: I will love you onwardly...thank you thank you thank you for what you gave to vlad and I, and to everyone else here at the Temple.
(09:41:37) thomaswfaulkner: Thank you for this space, Pastor.
(09:41:54) Rosalyn_J: thank you for those kind words
(09:42:26) Rosalyn_J: And now, I'd like to offer an opportunity to vladucard to share some words as well
(09:42:50) vladucard: Thank you for the opportunity, Ros
(09:43:24) vladucard: Senan and I's friendship started about a month or so before our apprenticeship became official.
(09:44:13) vladucard: It had been clear that he had been following my journal since day 1 and that he had taken his time to read it thoroughly and share his thoughts.
(09:45:05) vladucard: His words in my journal were always encouraging and compassionate, even when my posts felt like they needed more, he always said that I had done a great job.
(09:45:39) vladucard: Eventually, he reached out via PM to get to know me better. Immediately, I knew this was a good man with a good heart. Also, with the desire to teach and watch others grow.
(09:46:50) vladucard: We chatted back and forth getting to know each other and also to get a glimpse of what his teaching style was like. Around the same time, I had another TM approach me as well. I was open with him and explained that I had another potential teacher and he was understanding and encouraging. He told me to take my time and that whomever I went with, I would be a great Knight.
(09:47:43) vladucard: I took time to meditate on this and something always steered me towards Senan. I knew, in my heart of hearts, that he was the best choice for me. Then, just as time went by, we were now in an apprenticeship together.
(09:48:39) vladucard: I share this because I appreciate the time and dedication Senan put forth in getting to know me and assist me. I was his first apprentice, it was new to him and new to me.
(09:49:05) Temple remote: Locksley logs into the Chat.
(09:49:54) vladucard: He was always wary of my feelings and when the time came around for Thomas to be picked up as an apprentice, he reached out and asked how I felt about it. That's how he was, he cared so much about other's feelings that he put his aside to take others into consideration. Of course, I had no issue with it and soon after, I had a brother.
(09:50:09) vladucard: He did the same for his 3rd apprentice, always reaching out and getting our opinion.

(09:51:03) Temple remote: Arisaig logs into the Chat.
(09:51:55) vladucard: My apprenticeship with him was put through a bit of a halt due to some personal issue in my life. Senan was always very understanding and patient. He took the time to talk to me and make sure I was alright. In fact, we had just talked on November 15th, days before he left us. He had told me his health wasn't very good but you know the first things he did after that? Ask about my situation. That's how he was. That's WHO he was.
(09:52:09) Temple remote: steamboat28 logs into the Chat.
(09:54:23) vladucard: The news of his passing broke my heart, I just couldn't believe it. For some reason, one of the first memories that came to mind with him after I was told of his passing was when we had just made the apprenticeship official. I had asked him "So, what would you like to go by? Senan? Steve? Master?" and his reply was "whichever, you can call me dumbass, even". I replied with "Ok, Master Dumbass!" to which he laughed. It's those memories that I will forever cherish, the goofy, compassionate, dedicated man that he was.
(09:54:59) vladucard: Lastly (and I'm sorry if I'm kind of all over the place, I'm horrible at getting my thoughts together), I will share one of the most important lines Senan said to me.
(09:55:34) vladucard: I had just made a post in my journal that was full of negativity due to my job at the time. Senan reached out to me via PM and explained how that must have taken lots of courage to post.
(09:57:13) vladucard: I explained that it had and that it felt amazing to confess to something that was putting such a weight on my shoulders. Further on, he told me that we are not perfect, Jedi are not perfect and that we need to work to be as close to perfect as we can. He then said "Be you, Rosa, the good and not so good". That is something I carry in my head and heart forever. He knew that, as an apprentice, I had much to work on and, near the end, he saw how much I had grown.
(09:58:54) vladucard: He always told me that he knew I could be an amazing Knight. I now have to work and make him proud. I will forever cherish him and hold his lessons close to my heart. I will use his lessons to be the best person he knew I could be and I hope all the others who was touched by him will do the same. I will miss you, Master, but I know that you are never really gone as you are now with us and one with the Force.
(09:59:10) vladucard: Thank you for letting me share my words, Pastor.
(09:59:25) Rosalyn_J: And thank you for sharing
(09:59:41) Rosalyn_J: And now we will hear from Goken

(10:04:48) Rosalyn_J: awww he must have timed out
(10:05:16) Rosalyn_J: Is there anyone from his tree that I may have missed?
(10:05:42) Rosalyn_J: I know there are a few notable faces who aren't here: Kyrin and Atticus
(10:07:30) Rosalyn_J: I'd like to move on to the next part of the service: Senan's connection and impact
(10:07:45) Rosalyn_J: I have a video I would like to share with you all

(10:18:01) Rosalyn_J: I do ask that you use the command ./msg rosalyn_j to send me a private missive so we can have some order

(10:19:35) JLSpinner: Thank you
(10:20:09) JLSpinner: I will always cherish the time I had with Senan.
(10:20:47) JLSpinner: We spent a lot of time with our mixed roles here.
(10:21:24) JLSpinner: He was such a reliable person.
(10:22:56) JLSpinner: Its funny that Pastor views Senan as the beacon of the Knights code, because i often found him to be such a good representation of the Creed.
(10:23:34) JLSpinner: In so few words, Senan was a selfless and compassionate leader.
(10:24:07) JLSpinner: His lessons of love and courage will not fade quickly from oir lives
(10:24:31) Temple remote: Reliah logs into the Chat.
(10:24:43) JLSpinner: His influence will continue to serve for the better
(10:24:58) JLSpinner: But I am going to miss that man
(10:25:04) JLSpinner: That Knight
(10:25:47) JLSpinner: But I'm glad that he finally has found some peace from his longest fight.
(10:25:59) JLSpinner: Thank you
(10:27:00) Rosalyn_J: Is there anyone else?
(10:27:28) Rosalyn_J: and now, we will hear from Tellahane
(10:30:19) Tellahane: I am probably one of the few who got to interact with steve in all of his amazing facets, from a member, as an apprentice, as a fellow knight, and council member. It was often that he and I ended up on opposite sides of the table when it came to debate, or discussion. No matter what the topic or problem or anything that man would always find his way to the middle of the table. He would always be willing to consider other perspectives even if he agreed to them or not. Even under the most stressful of times he would seem to have a bottomless pit of patience and a calm I always envied.
(10:33:07) Tellahane: If there was anyone I looked up to the most for his ability to continue to serve under any situation it was him. Where I had to step away he continued to march forward. There isn't anyone I respected more, and anyone I will not miss more. In his loss we remember him, we remember his strength, his passion, and he will forever be a part of this temple, and our lives.
(10:34:06) Tellahane: I've always said we are a sum of all of the events in our lives leading up to today, and I am thankful for steve to have been a large part of that. I am a better person for it. I will miss him, Thank you
(10:36:19) Rosalyn_J: Is there anyone else who would like to share?
(10:38:06) Rosalyn_J: I believe twigga would like to share, but her connection is unreliable
(10:38:25) Rosalyn_J: once she gives the word, I can paste her words
(10:39:04) Twigga:
(10:39:04) Twigga: Please do - sorry - on a train right now!
(10:39:04) Twigga: Please forgive typos!
(10:39:22) Temple remote: Error: User locksley not found.
(10:39:22) JLSpinner:
(10:40:21) Rosalyn_J: Senan, to me, was always a friend first, and a smart one at that. I enjoyed exploring ideas with him, and sharing the odd tit-bit of news here and there. It was a fun relationship. Light. Full of joy, which I feel was mutual. That sense was very constructive for me - I don't know if there is anything more affirming than sensing someone's delight in you, just as you are. I didn't speak to Senan about my own chronic illness until the last month of his life, and I am so grateful I had an opportunity to thank him for his openness in his journey. It was truly inspiring. I find I can now help myself far more in patient groups - something I started again with support from his temple brother, Atticus, but really Senan was the model.
(10:40:46) Rosalyn_J: I am grateful for his life. Deeply grateful for all he brought to so many.
(10:40:59) Rosalyn_J: (on behalf of Twigga)
(10:41:25) Rosalyn_J: And now, we will hear from Locksley
(10:41:55) Locksley: Senan was someone special. I know this not because I knew him well - our communications were few, though he was always friendly and outgoong, even when he had much to dral with himself. I can see the impact he had, however, on so many people -- an impact that reached far and wide, crossing continents, oceans; he was clearly someone who bridged divides -- of all kinds.
(10:43:34) Temple remote: steamboat28 has been logged out (Timeout).
(10:43:35) Locksley: I did not know him well. I wish, dearly, I had had the chance to know him better. In following his journal, I was reminded, constantly, to face my own trials and terrors with humilty and humor; woth grace. I told him once how much that meant to me-- how much it meant to have such a light when my own times were dark.
(10:45:06) Locksley: That earnestness and openness struck me as deeply Jedi; in Steve was a core of truth - a clarity about wjo he was; who he wanted to be, that made me feel stronger kust for having some small contact with him.
(10:46:57) Locksley: And it is, finally, within the grander community that we can look to see someone's impact: so manu hatgering, so many feeling for his life, as well as his passing; people reaching out to his wife to support her. It makes me proud of our community, and it makes it clear to my eyes that he was one of the best of us: someone to look ip to in so many ways. Someone we will all miss in our different ways.
(10:47:32) Locksley: I've tambled on enough, now. Thank you for the opportunity to speak. May the Force be with you, all.
(10:48:13) Rosalyn_J: thank you
(10:48:25) Rosalyn_J: Is there anyone else?
(10:51:16) Rosalyn_J: Alright. I'd like us to close this service with The Code

I've sorted out the youtube video
Warning: Spoiler!

(10:22:56) JLSpinner: Its funny that Pastor views Senan as the beacon of the Knights code, because i often found him to be such a good representation of the Creed.
(10:23:34) JLSpinner: In so few words, Senan was a selfless and compassionate leader.

Hi
I meant to post earlier, but I just want to say a very heartfelt thank you to you all. Whether your part was small or big this week in the first days of grieving or in the service, it had an impact. We have done a good thing in honoring our brother, Senan. I think he would be proud.

I am very sorry, I had to leave part way through Vladucard's time. I've read the transcript and you all spoke wonderfully. I would like to share now what I would have said during the service.
As was mentioned, Senan always thought of others before himself, even while going through something so terrible, something which could have easily driven the best of people to selfishness. As he neared the end he applied to be a part of many studies. He hoped that they could help him, but he spoke more so of his hope that the doctors could learn from him something that could later help others.
In one of our last conversations he summarized himself perfectly. "I have to remember that it is okay to say 'no' when I need to put myself before others."
Many say that about themselves, but few live it the way that Senan did. He said that to me while quelling my doubts and fears about Knighthood. He told me what a great Knight I'll make. I can only hope that he knew how much that meant coming from him.
Thank you Senan. For everything.
