Obi-Wan saved it to give to Luke similar to how he saved Qui Gons after his death. Yes, it is the saber that was used to slaughter the Temple. As for why Kylo wants it well its likely that A) he wants it due to his Vader obsession, and B.) because his own Kyber crystal is cracked and thus unstable so a replacement would likely be better. The cracked and unstable crystal is why his weapon has ports in it. and thus looks more like a European sword.

How do we know Kylo s is cracked out of curiosity ? And isn't there a shortage of not a very small amount of crystals due to the Death Stars old or new can't member which if both ran on the things ... and was distroued? ... and the planet where they came from blown up to? - I saw ray gots a new one ?

Ide be ( excuse the word) pissed even more if mine was cracked and ray showed up with one ... just saying

A visual guide to Epsiode 7 showed and described Kylo's crystal to be cracked.

As for the death star's kyber crystal, well, prolly space dust. And then for the planet where you get crystals, Ilum, we don't know where it is anymore. Many have speculated that Starkiller base was able to store that much power because it is Ilum, so it's destruction destroyed all those crystals.
