Same here! I was nearly a non teenager when I went to the theater to see this! (I'm sure others here were older than I was, but still...) Geez. And yes, I too found Jar Jar annoying, but he was meant to be. Certainly didn't ruin the film for me.

15 years already, eh? Doesn't really make me feel old, the grey hairs take care of that. Jar Jar annoyed me from the first second he came onto the screen and that never changed. Of course it was a hard battle to decide whether young Anakin or Jar Jar annoyed me the most but in the end Jar Jar won.
Still enjoyed the movie though I really don't think it's that good a movie but it's still Star Wars and that extends my tolerance quite a bit :)

I was 9 when I saw it in the cinema...now I'm supposedly a grown-up person with a job and a flat and stuff :S

Still, I take heart in the fact that, even at 9 years old and with no prior experience of Star Wars, I detested Jar-Jar...

I decline to state my age at that time...but I was out of the military for a year by then....

EDIT: I'm sooooo glad I don't look my age....my youthful looks and personality are all I have going for me...how sad is that

Jar-jar's role was not one purely conceived to appeal to children (albeit the naïf aspect of all of us does lend itself to the hatred of him -- we res cogitans tend to hate innocence).

This personnage is an archetype as well, represented in centuries of classical (mythic) théâtre.

So, please -- take a moment and reflect on just why you hate this character. What about silliness gets on your nerves ? Personally, I've always found C3PO much more irritating than Jar-jar - because he reminds me just how anal-retentif I myself get about 'programmed protocol' (which is a little bit why I resist it).

Ergo : I suppose that many of you would be offended if I were to suggest that such a profound hatred of this archetype (the fool, the parasite) reveals perhaps a psychological glitch that a great many of us would like to keep very tightly repressed ?

... just curious ...

EDIT : Oh .... and just to add -- I was 32 when 'The Phantom Menace' came out. The first time I saw it was a pirate copy someone managed to smuggle to Lyon, where the 26 June, the péniche-cabaret La Marquise turned the upper deck into a make-shift cinéma. It was all in English and un-subtitled. I got sollicited for translations all the way through it ... Having to try to translate Jar-jar into French on-the-spot was enough to make me, if not hate him, at least wish that he could have been in a different film.

Honestly, I actually have no problem with the sod but I understand the dilemma

I'll admit the traits to jar jar, being annoying and in your face ( though in my case its intentional), rarely taking things seriously blah blah blah are all things I do, all things I have no shame in doing lol but I don't think its that element that really had people hate the guy.

It ultimately was because it was a giant clash of tones, between an established theme of star wars and a theme being established with Jar jar, it kinda contradicted and I won't get into exactly how because I have a funny metaphor.

So I was talking to liz, steamboat and I think you too lol about an brilliant bloody idea I have:

Alan watts, the rap album. Keeping with the subject of his stuff it'd be titled " keepin' it real" and it'd have all the messages and stuff that Watts presented but in a different environment.

Now the thing about this idea is, it's completely comedic, if I did this it would be with no intent of being serious and be presented in the way that the audience member would have the best chance of not taking it serious. One of the things that illustrates the joke is the clash of tones. Alan Watts, is a more zen like peaceful hippie type vibe, its established and already associated with music and imagery. Rap music however is abrupt, in your face, crude and with its own imagery. Both of these tones clash, because imagining Alan Watts spreading his message with a ghetto blaster, a sideways cap and plastic bling bling is just silly, sure you could take it seriously lol, but to the main audience it can't be. And I'd say thats why most people have a problem with Jar Jar, his tone contradicted an established theme with star wars that it goes beyond comic relief to the point you almost can't take any situation he's in seriously. And when you want to connect to the story or at least the function of the story, especially one like star wars, there are scenes you do wanna take seriously.

idk, my two cents
