In service to the plot, Jar Jar's ethical character trait of trust is necessary for him to move in the Senate to give special powers to the Chancellor. His flaw is that he trusts too much and so is easily manipulated. The character is enjoyable and annoying.

One 'on-the-set' rumor was that Neeson begged for his character to be killed off so he wouldn't have to act in front of a blue screen and especially share a scene with Jar Jar.

There's a video showing Portman acting the robot factory thing... absolutely everything is blue screen and at some point she stops and asks Lucas (or director, unsure) if he knows what he's doing :P

The cobbled together gritteness of the first few original episodes worked so well for the setting (years under ruthless Empire hegamony), but those [strike]later[/strike] earlier (newer) ones where set in the height of a civilization and often at the centre of wealth and power hence complexity and cleanliness, so it would have been a lot of work to create a futuristic, diverse and large scene opulence without CGI - it just looks too fake though (in those days).

But this could be accomplished by some character other than a bumbling idiot. Why this particular bumbling idiot?

old fashioned special effects are just better. I understand they want to replace what they used to do in cartoon/painting with CGI, but the rest? There's just no need for CGI characters. R2 simply was more awesome when there was a man inside.

I disagree. I don't think they're "better". I think they're better for many things, but they're not better overall. Each has their own place. I just think we're sick-to-death of CGI.
