and what would you say about independance? because you can attain the exact same weakness to that to.
And isn't pride responsibility? I'll take pride in good stuff and some bad stuff too ( I guess I'm a sick sad individual).
they were right when they said this is a society of avoidance and evasion.

Yeah. . . and pride could be replaced with other words . . in and of itself it is a wonderful communication vehicle.
Thank Desolous for the enlightenment, i don’t have recall of “pride” being used in that light. Your words are cause for me to enter contemplation of the experiences that two vets in my life have shared with me regarding some of their wartime decisons (one VietNam and the other second wave front lines Okinawa). All i can say is wow right now . . am still steeping in the teapot of contemplation). Thank You!

Everything must be in moderation Sid...
Even the Col. that Desolous refers to, I feel as an intelligent man, would agree, that holding onto your pride, especially in a life or death manner, would be foolish...

My interpretation is that it is talking about sometimes you need help and you have to let go of your pride (The pride of not needing help) to move up. I don't think it's saying you need to let go of pride altogether just in a situation where you need help.
Really though I was talking to a psychologist who studies success, seems the number one problem people have is never asking for help because they feel independence is an admirable trait when in fact it gets in the way of people being the social animal you evolved to be. Interdependence which is working with other (independant) people to accomplish a common goal beyond what you could accomplish by yourself is one of the secrets to success.
Sidenote: Dependence and Codependence are still worse than independance.

Maybe it's just me then. I guess it's wrong to be so proud in what you do or believe in that you'd be willing to die for it.

i see yet another take on the pic
that the signage . .”sometimes it is hard to open your hand but you need to . .”
also applies to the open hand reaching over the cliff.
