Lessons of the Dead

by JLSpinner

As we approach the closing of the year we find time to give thanks and to count our blessings. We come together and share the bounty we have earned this year.  At this time we are also reminded of death.

The death of a loved one is a powerful experience. No words can describe the immense feelings involved. Or the gaping void we are left with. No phrases or comforting words can patch up the wounds. The dead will stay dead and we are left to live our lives. It’s not fair, and for many, it can be unbearable.

“Don’t be saddened because they are gone. Be joyful that you had the time that you did.” It is through ourselves that we can pick up the pieces of our lives and start living again. With the memories that we’ve had together. The lessons that we’ve learned. With our actions we can let our fallen live again.

During the Autumn season I find time to reflect on those I have lost. To reflect on how I can be used to honor them. To show everyone the importance they had in my life. The radiance of their love. And now, because of those before me, the radiance of mine.

Talk to the dead. Remember what they did for you and do it for another. Share the love and the light that they shared. Let them live again. Death comes for us all, but we will never truly be far from those whom we love and care for. It is through our love and service that we live on. That our loved ones live on.

In the moment of now, if our hearts are open and our focus is keen, we can find eternity with those whom are gone. We can find our loved ones again. And so too will those we leave behind find us.

Everything we touch in life is changed by our touch. Be it for the better, or for the worse. So we must decide in each moment what we want to do. Can you make one right decision? And another? Or will you sacrifice eternity and the opportunities that unfold before you? Will you carry on a legacy of love and kindness?

So mourn the dead. There is no shame in mourning such a loss. But once you’re done, show the world why you mourned. Show them love and eternal life. Show them the beauty and knowledge that you were shown. Show them why we remember.

One right decision at a time.

May the Force be with us all.
