The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins does a brilliant job of explaining how evolution actually works.

Should be compulsory reading in all schools IMO

I like 'Power, Sex, Suicide - Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life' by Nick Lane. It is a nice book about how our cells work. So biology for everyone :)
