First of all , i get to write a sermon again , which is always fun. As where churches in general have a list of subjects to stick to and we also do at the Temple of the Jedi order. It's not as strict as in other churches though and i am using the freedom granted to me to yap to you all about faith and superstition on this glorious Friday the 13th
Being religious in general might reflect spirituality that is connected to the reliance on supernatural forces, which also reflects a part of superstition. Looking at the different religions we observe the tendency that having a religious denomination goes in line with a stronger belief in superstition. For the Jedi Faith its apparent that people can see the Force as a supernatural existence that holds everything together. For people of other faiths that can conflict with their belief in a God that is also a person that could also be seen as being the Force. For others the Force is something that God uses. In this Temple we have a good mix of different faiths and convictions which lead to a more open view on how people wish to connect to the Force. From Wiccan to Norse beliefs , from Judaism to Atheism, the Jedi community is a healthy mix of like minded people who are convinced and devoted to make this world a better place.
Superstition is a widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences, especially as leading to good or bad luck, or a practice based on such a belief. Although not all superstition is based on fear , a lot of it is, and so are a lot of Religions. Don't open your umbrella in the house , don't put your shoes on the table etc. Jedi Faith does not bother with all of these things it seems, although getting a bad feeling about something might suggest such. Stars may or may not have influence on your mood or good luck but in the end you and only you are responsible for your own actions. And that is where the harmful overlap with Religion comes to mind. No, Satan did not let you do stuff , you did , you are responsible. Its like blaming the rain for your bread not being cooked properly.
Jedi Believe;
In the Force, and in the inherent worth of all life within it.
In the sanctity of the human person. We oppose the use of torture and cruel or unusual punishment, including the death penalty.
In a society governed by laws grounded in reason and compassion, not in fear or prejudice.
In a society that does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or circumstances of birth such as gender, ethnicity and national origin.
In the ethic of reciprocity, and how moral concepts are not absolute but vary by culture, religion and over time.
In the positive influence of spiritual growth and awareness on society.
In the importance of freedom of conscience and self-determination within religious, political and other structures.
In the separation of religion and government and the freedoms of speech, association and expression.
Jedi believe in a society governed by laws grounded in reason and compassion, not in fear or prejudice. What does this mean for Religion and Superstition? I think we should Always try to align our beliefs with what is aligned with our values as a Jedi. That also means we should positively influence spiritual growth and awareness of our society. Mindfulness is key in these matters , we should all be aware of our prejudices and try to be better and if being better , and making this world a better place conflicts with your Religion , its time to take a looking glass and see why and consider your place in this all. You cannot be a Jedi and a Jerk at the same time. We are all connected and have the power to radiate love and togetherness and i wish you the most lovely time before Christmas when you celebrate it and for everyone else a blessed end of the Year ,
May the Force be with you , now in 2025 and Always!
