Tell that to most Americans, they all seem to think the US is the centre of the universe! and everyone else should bow down to them.
Confidence can appear that way to less confident people... and from what I've seen the culture of the USA tends to create very confident young people. It might not be particularly deep confidence, but it certainly seems very well polished if it isn't. I went through a phase of super confidence, and it generated so much motivation and expression that it tended to make me look like a doofus, but in reality it was just the difference in size of personality....... now there is a thin line between having a big personality and being egotistical and I think the difference is the later becomes about putting others down rather then trying to build oneself up. But the US really needs to get into metrics and ditch that silly imperial stuff

I would not call it confidence, more like arrogance.

But that is what I was saying... confidence can appear arrogant - and there is so many of them I'm sure there is a good mix of all types!!
Makes me think a by-product of a successful competitive environment can be engrained habits, which could sit alongside confidence as a result which might give the impression of arrogance. They only need to look within themselves to find more then enough material and circumstance to foster growth - where as in that respect smaller countries tend to have space for individuals to be more detached (non-competitive, less people to be competitive against) and often compare themselves to bigger countries (faster exposure to different nations mannerisms). So its important to view people as individuals and give them a fair go, rather then stereotyping folk who might exist within a group that you might have had bad experiences with.

You seem to come in contact often with the wrong kind of American.
On another note people, you do realize America is a continent, not a country, right? I am several countries south of the USA and still I am American.

Well until 1945 Japan thought it was the center of the universe, not any more though, right?

Sad to say .. YES .. I am former Australian armed forces (RAAMC / RAinf) and being working in Close Protection since I left the forces. So most of the yanks I have run in to have also be military, but they have the people skills of a brick and come across as arrogant, I have worked along side Australian, British and Americans for years and the Americans have not show confidence, they have show arrogance that has cause more problems and sad to say the death of innocent people ...
And Yes I do know America is a ccontinent ... so I will correct it ... The USA

Time to learn about Perry ....
On July 8, 1853, The U.S. Navy steamed four warships into the bay at Edo and threatened to attack if Japan did not begin trade with the West. Perry ordered one of the ships to shell one of the small towns in to bay and gave the Japanese a white flag to surround if they wanted the shelling stopped ...
Even way back in 1800's the US assumed it was the centre of the universe!

I'm sorry that you have come across the sort of Americans you have, but we are all not arrogant or ignorant. I would ask that stereotyping not be utilized. And if I can just say, this thread was a request by Proteus that we remember the global reach of this forum and to frame our posts with that in mind, but it is not an excuse to bash the USA

Do not get me wrong, I have over 30 Yank friends, we are all members or Astromech, MSE or BB builders forums, and they are all on the same page because our love for building droids, but you also get the ones that like I said think because they are born in the USA, they should be feared and the US is the centre of the universe. They do not think about others, they think only of themselves.

I can agree with what you are saying. What are you hoping to gain from continuing this discussion? You are right. Would you like everyone else to join in and disparage some of the USA's citizens so you all can go and have a field day? Yes we need to be globally minded. Should we sticky the thread as a reminder? Really what would you like?
If nothing but to continue to talk about how some USA citizens are, can I suggest you move on to a different topic? Or start a new one?
