I watched the originals until my video player broke, before the prequels even came out. There are things I dislike about the prequels (pod racing, little ani) but then there are things I dislike about the originals (ewoks, some of lucas' graphic touchups).
Why the competition? Why do we have to decide which trilogy is better?

What competition? Lol. The two trilogys can be viewed in the following metaphor in regards to drinks. There is a fine wine that only gets better with age on one side of the table, and then on opposite side, a pabst blue ribbon beer, I leave it up to the reader to decide which one's which, LOL...

Or maybe people ought to just stop focusing on the negatives in everything they see, and focus more on the positives (i.e. what can I learn from it, etc.).
