Real-Life Minas Tirith Anyone?
49 Days and just under £1.85/$2.9 Billion to go...
We all share a love of Tolkien's work, and a desire to challenge the common perception of community and architecture. We believe that, in realising Minas Tirith, we can create not only the most remarkable tourist attraction on the planet, but also a wonderfully unique place to live and work.
We aim to create both residential and commercial properties, allowing for sustainable growth and a high quality of life.
Residential properties will be categorised by tier, quality and size. Tiers vary from 1-5, quality varies from 2-5 stars, with the higher star denoting higher quality, and size varies from 1-4 bedrooms. A "3.4.2 property", for instance, would be located in the 3rd tier of the city, be of a 4 star quality and have 2 bedrooms - perfect for a young family.
Follow our twitter account @realiseminas for regular updates on the project.
Our goal is to raise £1.85bn within 60 days. We're fully aware of the scale of our ambition, but we hope you realise just how special this project could be.
What We Need & What You Get
Let us break it down for you:
In order to realise this amazing dream, we have calculcated our required budget to be in the region of £1.85bn. The vast majority of this expense will cover building costs - £15m for land, £188m for labour and £1.4bn for material. The remainder of the money will be invested in maintenance and public services until the year 2053.
We aim to commence work on Minas Tirith by the end of 2016, and complete the project by the end of 2023.
We are currently considering two locations for Minas Tirith, both in southern England.
If we don't reach our goal of £1.85bn, all pledges will be cancelled and you will not be charged a penny.

I mean, I'd visit Minas Tirith. If it had a good school system, I might even live there! It would be amazing to live in Minas Tirith, after all -- but I just think there are better things to spend money on, and I don't have strong faith in the capabilities of the planning party.

Jedi serve in many ways. Each action performed, no matter the scale, influences the world. With this in mind Jedi perform each action with peace, caring, love, compassion and humility. So it is that each Jedi improves the world with each deed they perform.
Service is a big part of my Jedi path. So much so that I'm considering changes careers to better suit being a servant to the world.
This kind of project pulls at my geek-Romantic side. I can feel the tug in my heart: YES, let's build a Minas Tirith or a life-sized Death Star... But, then... I don't know. I get really upset when I think of all this money being raised to fulfill a nerd's wet dream. Because, that means our priorities as a society (or, a subculture) are very messed up. I have to remember that this is probably the idea of only a few people, and that most only donate because it is an impulsive decision. But, just like those people who want to build random cities on the water to get out of society... I just wish we would put those things aside and really work for the things that will change lives for the better.
Now, there is another side to this coin. I can't say I'm a Jedi without considering another possibility. What if this Minas Tirith is made? And, then, people who don't have jobs move into the city? What if it could become a haven for the destitute? Sure, it'd probably look like the Third Age of Man... haha. But, that could change over time.
I don't know... I just feel strongly about this. But, I won't say anything more about it.

You know, that was my first reaction too.
but.
1.5 billion is actually not that much in terms of social welfare spending, and when its gone, its gone.
How many jobs would this project create during construction, on going maintenance and running once its opened as a tourist attraction?
*and then I see Edan has beat me to the argument.

The only thing I will argue is that for a project like this, your not really creating that many jobs, and the type of employees your going to have in order to work there, even for the construction is going to be the high end better skilled ones that already have jobs, that are essentially getting pay raises working on this project.
Looking at the different donation values, $650k for a 4 bedroom 3 bathroom residence on the location, I have that size house for $105k here in my small town, this is by design of prices, expected to be a high priced tourist attraction, and its not a not-for-profit(unless I missed it), and while yeah the mcdonalds and other stores that go in there will create jobs going forward, the salary/pay of working at restaurants at theme parks and major tourist attractions is so much higher then out in the boonies its still could be money better spent elsewhere.
I also suppose just like disney land the ability to fill the imaginations and bring stories to life to even get a taste of what it was like to live in a place similar to the movies and have that experience(should see how many people visit some of the places lotr was shot at) is a novel concept and goal. It is a different way of providing help/support in some cases, I just still feel its going to be another tourist trap, and majority of the money made for it is still gonna help someone build a nice mansion somewhere.
I would be far more impressed if this whole thing was done under a not-for-profit style organization.
