I'm American and I write my dates as 15 Apr 15 or 15 April 2015 but that's how the US Air Force regulates they're written. I just don't bother making the effort to change how I write them even in the civi world lol. I even say dates that way. "Fifteen April twenty fifteen".

I had always just thought it to have to do with how many possibilities were in each category. Only twelve possible months so put that first, then only thirty one possible days so that'll go second, and possibly infinite years so that can go last. Such is just how I've thought of it though I suppose it is no more than mere speculation.

"Year-Month-Day" is what I use consistently - mainly because most of the work I do revolves around computers, and that format makes file management and archiving more convenient.

I can see how particular configurations would be more useful in certain situations over others, though.

I guess I order them as fraction's from small to large in both quantity and contextual quality; seconds, minutes, hours, day name, day number within month, month name, month number within year, Gregorian year number....

... and pluck the info most relevant to circumstance from there! Just pondering how I might actually best 'think' about it.

Lol, its just the 'massaging' of information to suit a medium of transmission..... I hope!!! Perhaps that is what I meant by 'contextual quality'. I've got to stop making words up... but it also goes the other way, such that voice transmissions have things like codewords etc so messages are less likely to get misheard. While for acronyms it might be about text messaging systems or something - mix of standardization and efficiency to meet limitations perhaps.
