According to the RIAA/MPAA, sites like megaupload and TPB make lots of money (hundreds of millions).... Have you ever wondered why they don't adopt this business model? Make money out of distributing stuff for free. oh and the distribution costs are really low too. They can get rid of the illegal competition, and run a legit free movies site 
On top of that, there's the advantage of try before you buy. Sure, people won't buy a rubbish movie, but they'll shell out big bucks on a collector edition of something good....
And why is it they don't make their products as attractive as the pirated ones? The pirate's cut is so much better.
