I simply find that most people have projects for their children. (hence why it's not a laughing matter -- kinda like bankers telling their children not to play with the poor... It's too bad to be funny)

It can be that they wanted to learn an instrument, so they make their kids do that. Or they want grandchildren, even if their kids dont want children themselves. etc.

I don't understand people who put pressure on their families (or worse: manipulate them). There are enough pressures in the rest of their lives as it is...

I agree with everything you said, kid's shouldn't be pressured or manipulated.
But dating and everything that goes with it, should be monitored and giving them guidance or helping them to make the best choice for them, NOT choosing for them.. should be done.
They don't always see beyond the moment and parents can help. Help not pressure or manipulate.
I find humor more in my own reaction to my daughter dating, but wouldn't tell her who to date..

How do you know what the best choice is? Maybe the best choice is a bad choice. If you consider that everyone will necessarily end up with a bad girl/boy at some point in their life, wouldn't it be best to let them do that first, and then watch them work out what the best choice is? There is no ambiguity when drawing your own conclusions. Other people's conclusions? Likely to be challenged. And Of course a kid will do things they think their "boring" parents would never do, because it's "cool".

I would like to think my advice and guidance would help them decide for themselves and yes most likely they ignore me and do exactly the opposite.. Won't stop me offering the advice cause I'm the parent and hey I'm not that boring....
