OK, joking aside. Now, that the year is 2016. Time to get in shape. I have gained a ton of weight. I was going to the gym 6 days a week, cut soda, certain meats, all sugars and other sweets outta my diet. Eating salads, roasted chicken breasts and about a gallon of water a day. Lost about 54 lbs in five months was really proud...I stopped!!! I went back to my old ways and man...just sad my body feels the weight gained and any tips?

get back on track

everyone effs up sometimes, somehow

the most important thing is to just get back to your good habbits - you did it once and made progress

now do it again - do it better

cut the garbage out of your diet again and get back in the gym

remember in the future that its a lifestyle and not a hobby

those moments of temptation and laziness are your chance to either be person you want to be, or to lose that person

face that and make the right choice

do the 100days of discipline challenge, if youre not already

good luck

Bottle up motivation and sell it? lol.

In all seriousness, I think you should just go back to your "old" old ways. Step by step. Introduce the new habits. Motivation is not a great thing because you cannot manufacture it.

Instead, daily, ask your body what it wants and needs. Learn to listen to it. Be like your own "body whisperer". Learn to hear what it's trying to tell you. And, eventually, don't go by what your "mind" wants you to eat and drink.. go by what your body wants. This is not a scientific skill. So, if you're Gisteron, don't come barking up my tree. I'm not claiming this makes any sense. I'm just telling you what works.

You may be surprised. I know people who do this who have lost 30 pounds eating ice cream three times a week. Because they need it three times a week. not their "body" necessarily, but their spirit. Their human-ness. Which is something that cannot be measured.

Ive been that road myself. Though not with much weight loss. However swtiching diets back and forth is not something I can do. When I start eating junk food for long periods of time now I feel like utter garbage. I get tired, I get head aches, and stomach troubles.
I feel your pain and the only suggestions I can make are as follows:

A. Start slow, sudden shocks to the system are not your friend.
B. Dont be hard if you mess up. Doing so will only make you binge and deny in a vicious cycle.
C. Find a variety of spices because healthy diets can seem bland.
D) Start to learn about healthier fats so that you can indugle without total derailment.
E) Teas are your friend. By tea I mean the kind you buy in bags not bottle packed full of sugar ones. A variety of teas can give you something more flavorful then water. As can lemon and other fruit/veggie juices. (watch the fruit juices though as you can end up taking in a butt ton of natural sugars)
F) Have someone to help keep you on track. Yes you can do it on your own but help keeping accountable is more incentive.

I'm with you, Sven One. I'm struggling with a recent weight gain as well, and it precedes the holidays. I've been mulling it over in my mind for a couple of months now. I don't make New Year's resolutions to start something January 1st as I know how easy it is to abandon that ship. I'm gearing myself up slowly. Now that the holidays are behind us, I'm not having a single glass of anything alcoholic until mid-February. I've increased my water consumption. I'm going to do it in small steps like this because I tend to be an all-or-nothing kind of guy. I just know I'm so far from where I need to be that if I try to go all-or-nothing with this, after a week I'm probably going to accept the nothing. So bit by bit, I'm going to edge myself closer to my goals in a way that won't seem like a lot of effort. It sounds like you might be looking at it from a similar point of view.

If you get to a point where you want someone to hold you accountable to your goals, count me in. I could use someone on the other side, myself.

All the best, friend.

many people look at their fitness goals and say "i want to lose X amount of weight" or "i want to fit into size X" or "i want a bigger chest/arms/ect"

basically, a lot of people are"results oriented"

i personally do do well being "results oriented"

my goals have to be performance based and effort based

i am more performance oriented: i want to perform up to a certain level:
lift a certain amount of weight for a certain amount of sets with certain number of reps

time/distance goals for running

know what to do in certain situations in martial arts, and be able to do those things effectively

that sort of thing

but even more than this, ive recently asked myself "how long does it take for these lifestyle routines to become so ingrained that they just come "naturally"? "how much time does it take until the habit of going to the gym 5-6 times a week is just a part of who i am? so much so, that i just couldnt imagine being any other way anymore?

from that line of thought i realized that, for me personally, i have to make my goals "consistency based", or effort based, more than anything else

so now my primary goal is to just be consistent for one full year - even if i slip here or there, theres no "giving up" - the commitment is to show up when i am supposed to show up, no matter how i feel, and no matter what happened yesterday

(on that note, pre workout creatine helps you perform better, and is safe - you basically have more energy to work out - but you have to use it to actually work out. if you just take cretine and sit around eating pizze lol you will gain weight - bad weight)

having a predetermined workout schedule helps a lot for me - i know what i want to do and on what days - and i know basically what my progress should look like in any given event, from week to week or every two weeks

when i dont quite make the progress i wanted to, i just keep going, i dont sweat it

PROGRESS COMES AS A RESULT OF FOLLOWING A GOOD PROGRAM, CONSISTENTLY

so i dont worry about my progress any more, i "worry" about my program

and being consistent

(theres a plateau effect whereby you have to change what youre doing or change how youre doing ti to continue making gains

that needs to be factored in once you stop making progress in a particular event

makig those adjustments is part of having a good program)

with food, its similar - i dont actually plan every single meal of the week, in exact order, a week in advance

but i have figured out my shopping so that i get all my proteins and carbs and fruits and veggies for the week ahead

and i get extras of stuff that i like, just so that i have around

in this way, i always have a healthy option available
which means that when pizza does show up, im not in the position of eating pizza or not eating anything at all

so having a plan is a big help

personally, i have come to appreciate water - water is actually pretty darn good really, because nothing else satisfies thirst like water, and when i drink it i know that i am drinking what my species and its ancestors have been drinking for several hundred million years - its the right thing for my body, and understanding that makes it much more palatable for me personally

for something with more flavor, there are some wonderful teas out there, which have natural ingredients that dont need sugar enhancement and which you can brew yourself, easily

last, im at the point where i am seeing results in the way i look and feel - and i dont want to lose that!

when pizza shows up, i ask myself "ok OB1, what do you really want more? the pizza? or that sexy bod youve been working to get for the __months?"

i can look at the pizza, and look at myself, and say "i want ME more than i want this pizza - this pizza is a moment, I AM A LIFETIME"

when i see it like that, the pizza doesnt look so good anymore

you can still lose weight eating pizza and burgers and fried chicken...i lost 64+ pounds doing so...

rather than eating 3 meals a day, eat 6 small meals a day...this is easy enough to do, take each of your meals and split them in half, eat half at meal time, then eat the other half 2 1/2 hours later....

stay active throughout the day...you don't have to spend hours at the gym...just be active...work around the house doing chores, play with your kids or pets, walk to the store....

drink plenty of water, you don't have to cut out soda or juices entirely....

it's all about moderation...

think of your metabolism as a fire...if you throw a bunch of big logs on the fire it takes forever for them to burn off, but if you throw a smaller log on every so often you keep the fire burning longer and hotter....

My goal for this year is to be more physically active and less of a little piggy at the dinner table.
What ever comes of that will be what it is.
