Russell Targ is a physicist who, among other things, was instrumental in developing laser technology and co-founded a 23 year ESP research program at Stanford Research Institute. He is also fascinated with Buddhism. I found this brief segment of an interview with Targ interesting and thought some of you might as well.
What he means by 'empty of meaning' in terms of the Buddhist teaching of 'empytness' is that things are empty of independent existence. The word 'empty' (shunya) can also be translated as 'hollow'. Nothing is independent, nothing is self-established.
There is conventional reality and ultimate reality. Conventional reality would be a table existing, but the ultimate reality is that no such distinction of 'table' exists - but we still need to use words like table so that we can talk. The truest way to describe this is with silence...
