Greetings!
I've noticed that many people have problem withone specific jomsocial-bug that doesn't allow to upload direct a new profile picture.
The most common way to fix that problem is by upload the photo first as regular photo and after to make this photo as profile picture.
One other way is to change the profile photo by using the path:
Home horizontical menu > profile > Change profile picture
Or simply use that link:

I promise a better post about this matter (with screen shots etc) in the near future, but for now i hope that helps
