(11:13:01) Rosalyn_J: Let us begin the ceremony in reflection :
(11:13:26) Rosalyn_J: We offer our thanks for the insight that springs from the Force as we seek to apply it to our lives.
(11:14:05) Rosalyn_J: As beings of light we connect with our brothers and sisters in the Universal Moment
(11:14:17) Rosalyn_J: and as beings of flesh and bone our footsteps walk this Earth and echo in time.
(11:14:31) Rosalyn_J: Grant us the focus, knowledge and wisdom to live each moment as best we can --

(11:16:49) Rosalyn_J: As servants of the people, Ministers are to shepherd them on their respective paths and to guide them to self-discovery and understanding.
(11:17:25) Rosalyn_J: With their fellow Ministers, they are to sustain the community of the faithful by the ministry of doctrine and guidance, that we all may grow into the fullness of the Force and better understand ourselves.
(11:17:51) Rosalyn_J: Will the Candidate please step forward and announce himself
(11:18:03) Atticus: I am Richard Laws, known as Atticus, Knight of Jediism and member of the Clergy.
(11:18:33) Rosalyn_J: Are you prepared to accept the responsibilities of the role of Ordained Minister of Jediism on this day?
(11:18:42) Atticus: Yes, I am.

(11:19:19) Raxicorico: I am Kyle Krumsick, known as Raxicorico, Knight of Jediism and Ordained Minister of the Temple of the Jedi Order
(11:19:53) Rosalyn_J: Has the Candidate completed all of the required Clerical training as prescribed by the Temple of the Jedi Order?
(11:20:13) Raxicorico: Completed and exceeded the requirements.
(11:20:20) Rosalyn_J: Does the Candidate fulfil the requirements according to their rank at the Temple of the Jedi Order, including all necessary Oaths or Vows?
(11:20:28) Raxicorico: Yes he has
(11:20:48) Rosalyn_J: Has the Candidate fulfilled all of the requirements for Ordination as prescribed by the Temple of the Jedi Order?
(11:20:56) Raxicorico: Indeed, he has
(11:21:17) Rosalyn_J: Is the Candidate under any judicial ban that would prevent this Ordination at this time?
(11:21:25) Raxicorico: None that I am aware of
(11:21:35) Rosalyn_J: And does this Ordination have the approval of the Council of the Temple of the Jedi Order?
(11:21:42) Raxicorico: Yes, he does

(11:22:11) Rosalyn_J: Ministers are called to be servants among the people.
(11:22:28) Rosalyn_J: They are to be messengers, watchmen and stewards of the Church.
(11:22:41) Rosalyn_J: They are to teach and to admonish, to nourish and to support, and to guide the people through the confusions of life, that they may grow in knowledge and wisdom of the Force.
(11:22:57) Rosalyn_J: As Jedi they are to protect the peace and defend the weak.
(11:23:12) Rosalyn_J: As Ministers they are to uplift the spirit through the guidance of the Doctrine and the wisdom of the Force.
(11:23:25) Rosalyn_J: With the qualities of compassion, understanding, tolerance and acceptance, they are to open their arms to embrace the community and to provide counsel in times of need.
(11:23:47) Rosalyn_J: They are to minister to the sick and prepare those who are transitioning from this world and back to the Force, supporting all those who are affected by such changes.

(11:24:03) Rosalyn_J: Standing together with their brothers and sisters, they are to provide light through the darkness, that the whole Church may be built up in unity and faith.
(11:24:24) Rosalyn_J: In addition to this, Ordination is a commitment for life. It can only be rescinded in the most severe of circumstances as this is a contract between the Minister and the Force, a dedication to serving the people through the Doctrine and the guidance of the Force.
(11:24:38) Rosalyn_J: This promise is written on the soul and strengthens every fiber of the spirit; as such it is not to be taken lightly and without due consideration.
(11:24:58) Rosalyn_J: Richard Laws Will you on this day devote yourself to the care and the needs of the people as an Ordained Minister of Jediism?
(11:25:09) Atticus: Yes, I will.
(11:25:14) Rosalyn_J: Will you faithfully minister the Doctrine of this church, by which our community may flourish in their faith?
(11:25:24) Atticus: I will.
(11:25:31) Rosalyn_J: Will you, reconciled to your eternal existence in the Force, strive to be an instrument of peace in the Temple and in the world?
(11:25:43) Rosalyn_J: Will you stand shoulder to shoulder with your fellow Ministers in upholding the spirits of the people and guiding them to their highest potential?
(11:25:44) Atticus: I will.
(11:25:48) Atticus: I will.
(11:26:05) Rosalyn_J: And will you strive to further your own self, to be the best that you can be and to allow your light to shine forth as inspiration to others that may follow?
(11:26:12) Atticus: Yes, I will.
(11:26:30) Rosalyn_J: Thank you. Know that you will always be supported by your fellow Ministers, by the Temple itself and by your own faith in the guidance of the Force.

(11:29:51) Atticus: I call this, "A Mission Statement".
(11:30:03) Atticus: I struggle sometimes to explain what it is that the Clergy are called to do.
(11:30:35) Atticus: Recently we took a climate survey here at the Temple.
(11:30:44) Atticus: As a result, we learned that many of our members and guests aren’t completely certain what the Clergy are,
(11:30:52) Atticus: much less what we do.
(11:31:27) Atticus: And I learned that I have trouble putting what it is that I do into words.
(11:31:45) Atticus: We are called to serve as spiritual guides for those seeking to walk the Jedi Path.
(11:31:53) Atticus: We are charged with a responsibility for the spiritual well-being of our members and guests.
(11:32:05) Atticus: No two of us see our mission the same way.
(11:32:16) Atticus: I have trouble journaling about what my ministry looks like.
(11:32:28) Atticus: It’s always there, whether I’m parenting or playing music,
(11:32:36) Atticus: practicing law or working retail,
(11:32:44) Atticus: teaching or learning.
(11:32:56) Atticus: How in the world do you describe something that just is?
(11:33:10) Atticus: A friend suggested that perhaps what I need is a mission statement.
(11:33:23) Atticus: As a body, we in the Clergy have been mulling that over for years now.
(11:33:35) Atticus: As a new Minister, I once wrote a mission statement for my personal ministry.
(11:33:45) Atticus: It talked about service, and tolerance, and meeting people exactly where they are.
(11:33:58) Atticus: It had a nice turn of phrase or two.
(11:34:10) Atticus: I threw it out.
(11:34:22) Atticus: Tolerance, understanding, service – those things are important.
(11:34:34) Atticus: But they’re not the mission statement. Not the real one, anyway.
(11:34:54) Atticus: And I came to realize that the reason it is so hard for me to describe what I do as a minister
(11:35:08) Atticus: is that I never know exactly what I’ll be called on to do as a minister.
(11:35:19) Atticus: So I start with the things I do know.
(11:35:33) Atticus: I believe that as a Jedi, I am called upon to make love and compassion the constant,
(11:35:42) Atticus: the central animating principle that informs everything else I might do.
(11:35:53) Atticus: Each small action, done with compassion, influences the world,
(11:36:03) Atticus: whether we can see its effect or not.
(11:36:13) Atticus: This I believe.
(11:36:28) Atticus: I believe that as a member of the Clergy, I am called upon to cultivate empathy.
(11:36:41) Atticus: It’s not enough to listen. We have to listen with the intention to remove the distance between us and another,
(11:36:52) Atticus: to put ourselves in the metaphorical shoes of the person with whom we are interacting.
(11:37:14) Atticus: We have to listen with the intention to truly understand, as best we can.
(11:37:23) Atticus: This I believe.
(11:37:32) Atticus: Compassion should make us willing to practice empathy.
(11:37:42) Atticus: Empathy in turn fuels our compassion.
(11:37:50) Atticus: Compassion.
(11:37:58) Atticus: Empathy.
(11:38:08) Atticus: . . . and then it feels like there should be a third thing, doesn’t it?
(11:38:21) Atticus: These kinds of things come in threes.
(11:38:36) Atticus: It should be a really good thing that sums up the action that derives from the practice of the first two.
(11:38:53) Atticus: A single word would be good; that would make it snappy, impactful.
(11:39:04) Atticus: But I just can’t find a single word that fits.
(11:39:13) Atticus: All that important stuff about service, and tolerance, and understanding,
(11:39:21) Atticus: caring for the spiritual well-being of others,
(11:39:29) Atticus: serving as a spiritual guide,
(11:39:38) Atticus: trying to improve the world through uncounted tiny acts of compassion --
(11:39:58) Atticus: how do you put all that aspiration into a single word?
(11:40:09) Atticus: The reason it is so hard to describe what I do as a minister
(11:40:20) Atticus: is that I never know exactly what I’ll be called on to do as a minister.
(11:40:29) Atticus: What that looks like from moment to moment
(11:40:39) Atticus: is doing whatever the moment requires.
(11:40:49) Atticus: It might be just a smile and a positive vibe.
(11:40:56) Atticus: (Force fistbump)
(11:41:12) Atticus: It might be a heartfelt expression of gratitude, showing another that you recognize the divine in someone even if others don’t.
(11:41:28) Atticus: It might be listening without judgment, an empathetic ear, a shoulder upon which to lean or cry.
(11:41:46) Atticus: It might be an insightful question that helps another examine what they are doing or feeling.
(11:42:01) Atticus: It might just be being there, being available and reliably so, for what my friend Twigga calls “allowing people to be ‘people-y’ on you.”
(11:42:18) Atticus: Just as the moment requires.
(11:42:26) Atticus: So:
(11:42:35) Atticus: Compassion.
(11:42:42) Atticus: Empathy.
(11:42:53) Atticus: And that elusive third word that means, “Appropriate act, TBD.”
(11:43:08) Atticus: That’s the mission statement.
