The impact of people's need for control

Adder, what does any of that mean? Appearance's don't suspend anyone's disbelief, people do suspend their own for the purposes of entertainment, as the article you linked explains in the very first sentence, referencing the dictionary in so doing. I have not the slightest clue what you mean by a suspension of critical faculties enabling control more easily. At most it can stifle self-criticism and thus inhibitions, but being willing to do more is not the same as being able, let alone being in more control. One who spends less time thinking may spend more time acting, but they will be acting on less robust ideas with less accurate expectations. If anything, the consequences will be more erratic the less guided the actions are. One less critical would - all else being equal - be in less control, not in more.

Exactly. I didn't mean self control.

Okay. It didn't sound like you did. Still not sure what you did mean though, if anything at all...

Funny. I was just writing about this very thing.

It's actually one of the reasons why I think Jediism is an excellent path.

The more that humans grow in number the more they must separate in proximity. The more we separate the more distant we become and the more harm and evil we can do to one another. Instead of cooperating we thus begin to compete. That competition is a form of nature trying to work out imbalances. If there are too many people vs the amount of resources... imbalance. How does it resolve itself? Competition.

Competition can take on many forms and can be anywhere on the range of positive and negative. We all want to survive so determine which path to take. The need for control is really a need to combat chaos. The more we are the more we feel and execute the need to organize our numbers. But the more this works in our benefit, creating wealth or 'surplus' the more that surplus looks good to those who are lacking resources. They are tempted by the imbalance to gain more power in order to control who gets the resources. So success in one group becomes the motivation for another group to steal that success.

So we need rules in order to keep people from taking, laws to order chaos. Those that respect the law and desire fairness want protection from those who don't. The fear of those who want to take creates more organization and power in an effort to subdue them. The effort to subdue them means more effort and organization on the part of those who struggle to survive and feel the need to take because, perhaps for them, the whole system was never fair to begin with.

The system protects those who have already obtained wealth by protecting wealth already obtained. The same system makes it more difficult to obtain wealth or to survive in world controlled by the wealthy. What's owned is protected and everything is owned. So the law evolves to keep criminal intent in check, to keep other armies in check, to keep WMDs in check while all these things we fear also evolve in order to keep taking, in order to keep feeding those who are left out of the system. Imbalance on one side creates imbalance on the other and we spend billions of dollars to defend against each other's fears by making ourselves into even bigger threats.

The atom bomb boils down to one farmer being scared of another farmer and what he'll do if he has a bad crop.
