Myleene Klass was warned by police for waving a knife at intruders in her garden
Myleene Klass was said to be "aghast" and "bemused" after being warned by police for waving a knife at youths who entered her garden.
The TV star and Marks & Spencer model was in the kitchen with her daughter upstairs when she spotted the teenagers peering into her window just after midnight on Friday. She grabbed a knife and banged the windows before they ran away.
Hertfordshire Police officers warned Miss Klass she should not have used a knife to scare off the youths because carrying an "offensive weapon" - even in her own home - was illegal.
Her spokesman Jonathan Shalit said the former Hearsay singer was "utterly terrified" and was stepping up security at the property near Potters Bar.
He told the Sunday Telegraph: "Myleene was aghast when she was told that the law did not allow her to defend herself at home. All she did was scream loudly and wave the knife to try and frighten them off.
"She is not looking to be a vigilante, and has the utmost respect for the law, but when the police explained to her that even if you're at home alone and you have an intruder, you are not allowed to protect yourself, she was bemused."
Miss Klass' fiance Graham Quinn was away on business at the time of the scare.
It came amid calls for greater rights for people to defend themselves against intruders on their property.
A spokeswoman for Herts Police said no reference was made on the Klass incident report about a weapon.
She said: "We got a call at 12.45am on Friday to reports of the owner of the property hearing noises outside their address. Officers were in attendance and checked the property. There was no one around although they could see footprints in the snow. Words of advice were given in relation to ensuring suspicious behaviour is reported immediately."

2010-01-1017:55:30 that's ridiculus she's a woman what's she suppose to do cry and beg them not to do anything? that law needs to be changed people should be allowed to defend themselves by anymeans necessary, especially women who have a disadvantage physically against bigger, stronger men
if they had broken in she and her daughter could of been seriously hurt, and the suspects could be gone long before the police actually showed up to do anything
in response to the knife waving she should of said she was cutting vegetables and tapped the window to get their attention how would they prove she wasn't as long as there were some veggies on the counter
2010-01-1021:02:58 Well - on the upside - most courts will be sensible on these matters and things are underway to change it for the better of 'sensible' and decnt/honest homeowners.
Sure, if you blow a burglar away with a gun here - youll end up in jail - if they are armed and you (in desperation) say. stab an intruder with a kitchen knife or whack em with a pan etc - (and it can be proven you had just cause) then youd likely get a caution
This part of the law will always be a grey area because as hinted - how does one prove 'intent' - eg - what if you always stored a knife under your bed for example?
Anyway - for what its worth - if I found an intruder in my home - id make sure they didnt run away n get away with it - UK 'justice' system is too soft on burglars who usually get away with it even if caught (the ususl 'im a drug addict, i'll get treatment etc' - if someone cant respect another persons home - there is something rotten in their core.
In Myleen case - its possible its just the usual teenage pranks - they werent in her home (but dont get me wrong, they have no right to be on her property late in the evening without permission) and I see no reason why a 'wave of a blade' in HER home is such a 'crime' - what she needs is high walls, a a big gate, all with spikes on top and a number of big dogs living in the yard.
Why a person should have to barricade themselves into their own homes to get some protection in this day n age is beyond me. Its totally wrong.

A woman was ordered out of her own bathroom dressed only in a towel when drug squad officers stormed the wrong house.
Elaine Squires was in the shower at her home in Inkerman Street, Preston, when police used a battering ram to smash the door open.
Her terrified daughter Erin, 22, was downstairs using the computer when officers flooded into the house at around 11.50am on Friday last week.
Mrs Squires, a governor at the nearby Roebuck School in Inkerman Street, says her terrified daughter had to be restrained by officers as she tried to run outside.
It was only when Mrs Squires had been ordered out of her bathroom by police that the officers realised a mistake had been made.
Mrs Squires, who is disabled, said: "It was the most terrifying thing we have ever been through.
"We have noisy neighbours anyway and I was wondering why they were slamming the door so many times, then I just heard my daughter shout up, 'The police are here!'"

Police demanded Mrs Squires, who was wrapped in just a towel, come out of the bathroom.
"Seconds later, the officers realised they had made a mistake.
"One of them handed me my dressing gown and in the meantime I could hear the sergeant shouting 'Out, out'," she said.
"Erin had told them our names and our address and they realised they had got the wrong house. Their excuse was there was no number on the door but there are door numbers a couple of doors down ? can they not count?"
Mrs Squires says her daughter, a nursery nurse, is "still shaking" after the ordeal.
She added that it will cost her around £110 for an emergency fix on her front door, although she will be reimbursed for that by police.
A spokesman for Lancashire Constabulary said: "This was a genuine mistake and our neighbourhood policing team have spoken to the lady at length and we have given an unreserved apology.
"In this instance the warrant was intended for an adjacent property where drugs paraphernalia was recovered."
2010-01-1117:01:49 ummm if paraphernalia was previously recovered at the property the warrant was issued for then how did the cops mess that one up?
was everyone involved in the recovery on vacation and forgot to give directions?
anyone see the movie "hot fuzz" this sounds like a scene from it
2010-01-1722:27:32 Apparently (after much UK public shouting about this) - Myleene has agreed to threaten future rapists and murderers with a rolled up tissue
Actually - the cops back-tracked their comments and 'apologised' for the way they reacted (only cos the press and general public made a mockery of them)
To prove the point - a guy was murdered by 4 robbers who smashed into his house to steal a flat screen TV.
May he rest in peace and may proper justice be done

2010-01-1912:16:16 if he only had a rolled up tissue this tragedy could of been averted i bet that case will end up being used at some point to make some changes to the law
it's sad that it takes death to enact change, especially when common sense, and intelligence can save lives by making the changes before something bad happens
i hope they at least caught the guys that did it so they cant do it again and cause more suffering
